How to get fitness Motivation. A guide for parents. The Carrot and Stick Method.

Fitness Motivation.

The Carrot and Stick method for young parents

These are the two most important reasons to get motivated and find that extra boost you want to put exercise in your life :

Let's start with the whip.

Obviously you need something drastic as I cannot believe that at 30something you are, you have given up your efforts and have let yourself fall to the vortex and the mercy of ruthless time!

I only have a word for you. Children. This is your whip. You're not alone in this life anymore. You have brought one or more creatures in to world. And you certainly want the best for them! As you certainly want to give the best example to them as well!

(Children have an incredible way of mimic what we do, how we do it and when the time comes they adopt many of our habits.)

Being a parent you have great reasons to motivate yourself and for this you are lucky.

Wouldn’t it be perfect if you can follow your children’s lifestyle and participate in some of their activities as you get older? So they create memories like "we did cycling with my mom when we were little," or "we walked for hours at the beach picking up shells," or "we went hiking once a month on Mt Parnitha".

There are several of such small things that create an endless list of activities and quality time that someone can dedicate to their kids to create such memories.

And it’s not only about building nice memories for them. I am referring to it as a mean of pleasure for everybody. Because you will be able, too, to enjoy doing these things with your family now, and in 5-15 years from now as well.

And later, when they will need your support you can help them directly without "natural" restrictions. Wouldn’t it be great if you were able to support THEM than needing THEIR support? Something that will come biologically and inevitably but I don’t want to start the eschatology now. After all, it's the circle of life!

(As I was thinking the other day "we will return the years that our parents spent looking after for us to our children, when the time comes.)

OK, I am not speaking about the far future that is unknown when it will come, but in the end, you will take the role of grandpa/grandma in the family and you will probably need to baby-sit for one, two or maybe three (OMG) little ones for a few hours or some days in the row.

Let’s go to carrot!

Vision.

Visualize all those things that will come in a short time. Imagine!!! The lights light up gradually, the curtain opens, smoke, music, bright lights, ACTION! Still here? I think you are. Think about this. Think that with small and controlled steps you will invariably be as fit as when you were 20.

At the same time think of your well being, your self-confidence, the contentment, the self-esteem, just by becoming thy old self. It will be like fooling time. Like swimming against the river tides and despite that you can actually win time before you reach the sea...!

Not to mention the moment you will fit into an old beloved piece of your wardrobe that now causes only sadness each time you look at it, and end up closing the closet full of guilt and frown.

But this doesn’t happen from one day to another, let’s not kid ourselves. Reverse aging and to get into fitness takes time. And it won’t happen by hitting the ground running which may lead to injuries, overwork and at the end this will lead you to give up your efforts. This needs to be done slowly and steadily. Make small steps further each day and you will get closer to your goal day by day.

You must wonder about the motivation called "carrot", right? Why I wrote everything that comes with it!

The motivation is to rebuild your life at all levels as you wish it without something to get in your way and keep you back. You shouldn’t stick to "if I was a little lighter or what if I was not so plump" mentality and all these limiting beliefs that we set to ourselves and keep us back. You will have a result; you will learn to love yourself and try to take care of yourself more.

Once I was laughing at these “before and after” press photos but I have come to a point to make one about myself now. Not to gloat, but just to show that it can happen, that it’s possible. And in fact, without any magical potions, “things”, products and miracles.

2012 - 2016. Without any strict diet or magical pills, thank god, only by improving my diet a bit, cycling, swimming and running now and then.

What do you need :

This cannot be done by whishing it. In order to succeed you need three things:

Determination

Determination is your most useful tool. Make a decision about it and make steps towards this direction. There is not just one right way, there are plenty. Do whatever makes you happy; don’t put your life in a strict exercise mould. Do whatever you like and make steps towards this direction.

Walking, swimming, cycling, jogging (although I dislike the word because it reminds me of joking), zumba, or spinning in a studio that is also fun to do with music;

Time

You definitely need to spend some time for it. For starters I would suggest a three and half hour sessions a week. What's 90 minutes next to the 10,080 minutes of a whole week? Peanuts!

And if you debate whether you have free time in our hands, let me tell you that yes, you do. We change our views on the important things a little and we find some time to do something good for ourselves.

Equipment

You need some equipment to watch your progress! And though it may seem silly to refer to your calendar and check the time you have devoted to your exercise, it’s important to have a limit so you won’t overdo it or over relax.

Ideas for recording your work out (the most economical)

  • Pen and Paper. Record your exercise on a simple calendar.
  • A fitness application on the mobile would be a good first solution. (One like Polar Beat e.g., that records the distance of walking or cycling.)
  • A combination of a mobile phone application and a bluetooth chest belt pulse for recording the rates of the heart. (The only cost is for the bluetooth pulse belt)
  • What would be ideal is a 24-hour activity tracker that counts the pulses from the wrist (or a pulse chest belt) that can also count calories during the exercise.

Fourth option is way more expensive but it is worth it as it is an investment for your health. Think it as a tool.  Especially the modern 24-hour fitness trackers that can also serve as a watch, smart watch with mobile alerts, step counters, sleep recorder and of course the ability to record your activity.
